i was recently at a friendly poker night, when i realized something that i'm sure casinos have known since day 1: people treat poker chips differently than real money. we usually just bring our jars of spare change - dimes and quarters mostly - nickels and loonies (that's a one-dollar coin, for you non-canadians) if you're hard up. by the way - never bring pennies to a poker game. it's pathetic, and a lot like throwing quarters at the stripper: not appreciated.
anyways...i digress....my point is that we usually use real money - actual coins - in our poker games, but this time the host had his new chip set that he got for christmas (didn't everyone?), so we used the cash equivalent of those. usually, dimes are the most-used denomination of coin - dime ante, bet a dime, raise a dime, if someone gets crazy, they'll raise a quarter (ludicrous, ain't it!). now, 3 of us out of the 5 players had played together in the past, so it's not like i got into some 'high' stakes game or something, but i've never seen such crazy betting from start to finish. quarters and dollars are flying into the pot left, right and centre!
it was certainly easy for me to hang on to my chips - i'd never seen such crappy cards in all my life (5 hours of poker, i won 3 hands!). but i wonder if the rest of guys had been throwing actual coins into the pot and hearing the clink! of them piling up instead of the knock! of those clay chips, they might have thought twice about chucking a dollar into the pot on every betting round..
